Troubleshooting USB232A-E-A Connection Issues with Rotel RA-6000

By flykantech.com May 27th, 2025 332 views

Question: USB232A-E-A is not working. I am using it with a Rotel Amplifier (RA-6000). My computer runs Windows 11 (latest version). What should I do?

Answer: If the USB232A-E-A is not working as expected, let’s follow these troubleshooting steps:

Step 1: Verify Device Status in Windows:
Open Device Manager on your Windows 11 PC and locate the USB232A-E-A device under Ports (COM & LPT).

1. Confirm there are no warning signs (yellow exclamation marks).
2. Confirm the device shows as working properly.
3. Note the COM port number assigned to the device.

Step 2: Confirm Correct RS232 Command Format for Rotel RA-6000:
Make sure you are sending commands that follow the Rotel RA-6000 RS232 / IP ASCII Controller protocol. You can download the official command list here: Rotel RA-6000 RS232 ASCII Controller Command List (PDF)

1. All commands must end with the "!" character (exclamation mark).
2. Commands must not contain spaces, carriage returns, or line feeds—only the terminating "!".

Example command:

$ power_on!

The Rotel device will respond with status messages ending with a "$" character (dollar sign).
Your controlling software must properly parse and process these packets.

Additional Tips:
Double-check your wiring and RS232 connections.
Confirm baud rate and serial port settings match Rotel’s specifications: 115200 bps, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, no flow control.
Test communication with a terminal program (like PuTTY or RealTerm) to manually send commands and check responses.

If you have verified all the above and still face issues, please provide more details about the symptoms, error messages, or communication logs for further assistance.
